How to choose fishing line

PE, fluorocarbon, or nylon?
PE (braid) is very strong for its diameter and has almost no stretch, making it sensitive and good for long casts, but it is less abrasion-resistant and easy to see. Fluorocarbon resists abrasion, sinks, and is hard to see underwater — ideal for leaders. Nylon (monofilament) is softer and stretches to absorb shock, and it floats.

Reading PE numbers and lb
The PE number (e.g. 0.8, 1.5, 2) indicates the line diameter, while breaking strength is usually listed in lb or kg. The higher the number, the thicker and stronger the line.

Leaders for predators
When using PE, tie a thicker fluorocarbon or nylon leader to the end. For snakehead that strike near fish cages, weeds, and rocks, a thick enough leader helps withstand abrasion.

Match it to your reel
Check the spool capacity on your reel (e.g. PE 0.8 – 130 m) so you buy neither too little nor too much line. BFS reels are usually spooled with thin line to cast light lures.

What is the difference between PE, fluorocarbon, and nylon line?
PE is very strong and sensitive but less abrasion-resistant; fluorocarbon resists abrasion and is hard to see underwater; nylon is soft, absorbs shock, and floats.
What do PE numbers like PE 0.8 or PE 1.5 mean?
They indicate line diameter. The higher the number, the thicker and stronger the line. Breaking strength is usually listed in lb or kg.
Why does PE line need a leader?
PE is less abrasion-resistant and easy for fish to see. A fluorocarbon leader at the end stands up better to rocks and fish cages and is harder to see underwater.
What line is good for snakehead?
Many snakehead anglers use PE as the main line to pull fish out of cover quickly, joined to a thick enough leader to withstand abrasion from fish cages, weeds, and rocks.
