Baitcasting, spinning, or BFS?
Baitcasting reels (the spool turns during the cast) are accurate and powerful for medium to heavy lures and for fighting fish near cover, but take practice to control backlash. Spinning reels (fixed spool) are easier for beginners and comfortable with light lures. BFS is a baitcaster with a very light spool, made for small lures that a regular baitcaster struggles to cast.

Gear ratio: PG, HG, and XG
Gear ratio tells you how many times the spool turns per turn of the handle. On Shimano reels, PG (power gear), HG (high gear), and XG (extra high gear) mark low to high ratios. XG retrieves line faster — good for fast-worked lures or pulling fish out of cover; lower ratios give more power for lures with heavy resistance.

Left or right handle
A "Left" variant has the handle on the left. On many Shimano baitcasters, odd model numbers (e.g. 71, 151) mean a left-hand handle and even numbers (70, 150) a right-hand handle. Pick the side you normally crank with.

Max drag and weight
Max drag sets how hard the reel can resist a fish pulling; reel weight affects comfort when casting all day. For freshwater predators like snakehead, a strong enough drag helps keep the fish away from cover.

What do XG, HG, and PG mean on Shimano reels?
They mark the gear ratio: PG (power gear) is the lowest and most powerful, HG (high gear) is in the middle, and XG (extra high gear) retrieves line the fastest.
What is the difference between baitcasting, spinning, and BFS reels?
